Reflexology centres or sex dens?

KUCHING: A stern warning has been issued that reflexology centres found to engage in the sex trade will be closed down.

Environment and Public Health Minister Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh said officials from his ministry, the councils and the police were working closely to combat illegal sex and to prevent the spread of the dreaded AIDS virus.

“We have the by-laws and regulations which clearly spell out that any reflexology centre harbouring illicit flesh trade will be closed down,” Wong told The Borneo Post in a telephone interview yesterday.

He added that the authorities were continuing their clamp down of these illegal centres.

Wong, however, was unable to say off hand the number of reflexology centres in the state and how many had been closed down.

“As far as addressing the issue of foreigners getting involved in the flesh trade is concerned, the effort must be a joint one involving the various ministries and enforcement agencies. Then only we can be successful in overcoming this problem,” he said.

Wong was commenting on the problem faced by the Sarawak AIDS Concern Society (SACS) in reaching out to foreigners who provided sex to their patrons in the guise of providing reflexology in reflexology centres that had mushroomed in the major towns and cities across the state.

SACS project manager Rahmah Wahap-Nicholls had said a total of 124 housewives had contracted HIV from their husbands.

The accumulated number of reported cases of AIDS in Sarawak from 1999 to 2009 is 1,208, out of which 265 are females and 76, males.

According to SACS, beside reflexology centres, foreign prostitutes also ply their trade in massage parlours, karaoke joints, night clubs and hotels.

Rahmah added that it was very difficult for SACS to reach out to foreign prostitutes as they were tightly controlled by their ‘towkays’
