KUCHING: Sarawak will trim its squad to 25 for the M-League next season from the 36 players comprising 13 current state players, 13 Sarawak Cup players and 10 from Peninsular Malaysia training for the selection trial under head coach Zaki Sheikh Ahmad.

Zaki hinted that several new players would be drafted into the final squad.

“At the end of this week, we will finalise the selection,” he said yesterday. He added that a friendly match would be played against Yayasan Sarawak tomorrow and DBKU on Friday with both matches kicking off at 5.30pm at the state stadium.

Sarawak finished sixth scoring 38 goals and letting in 33 last season and Zaki is on the lookout for a player to beef up the strike force if the team were to improve on that performance next season.

He is keeping his eye on former MP Muar striker, Khairul Azahar Eidros to fix that problem.

One player who is the centre of much discussion and speculation among local fans is Rayzal Abdul Jalil, son of former head coach and state player, Abdul Jalil Rambli. Rayzal had an outstanding season with PDRM this year, and is rated good enough to play for the national junior team by Zaki.

“Nothing is conclusive yet, Rayzal did came for the selection trial, but will he play for the state team? That I cannot say,” said Zaki.

Although the new MLeague season kicks off on January 5, Zaki said the draw had yet to be made and he was in the dark over who their opening match opponent would be.

“We were supposed to attend the seminar during the Sarawak Cup last month, but somehow the event was delayed,” he said.
